Aretha Franklin will open the Toronto Jazz Festival on Friday, June 24, 2011 at 8:30 p.m. with a free concert at the jazz festival’s Toronto Star Stage at Metro Square, located at 221 King Street South between Simcoe and John Streets. The Queen of Soul, who was rumoured to have undergone surgery for an undisclosed reason late last year, appeared in fine form on the recent Oprah Winfrey farewell show, belting out a powerful rendition of “Amazing Grace.” Attendees can obtain wristbands for the licensed Mainstage Marquee at Metro Square, which seats 1,200, or watch the concert on the outdoor video screens. There is a wristband policy for the Marquee. Wristbands will be available on Friday, June 24, 2011 at 4 p.m. at the “Will Call” tent on the north side of Metro Square. Jordan John & the Blues Angels will open for Franklin. Marquee doors open at 7 p.m.
