Driving north on the long residential stretch of Broadview Avenue north of Gerrard Street, you will stumble upon a charming west-facing patio belonging to an even more charming coffee shop: the Rooster Coffee House. The popular indie cafe, which has been open for about a year-and-a-half, is the bearer of the essential three S’s for success: 1) serendipity for its surprising location, tucked as it is among a residential enclave 2) scenery for its prized spot at Riverdale Avenue directly across from serene Riverdale Park, and 3) style for its sophisticated interior, complete with a communal table and free Wi-Fi, and magnetic curb appeal. On any given day, local Riverdale residents swarm the front patio, with or without their canine friends (the patio is dog-friendly) enjoying the Rooster’s lattes, cappuccinos, and espressos made with Te Aro beans, which the owners roast several times a week. In order to support local businesses, many of the Rooster’s cookies and sweets are made by a neighbour in the area, while sandwiches are from the divine Loïc Gourmet on Queen Street East. If you’re a downtown or west-end dweller, it’s time to go east, my friend, and discover what all the hype is about.
