
If you’re craving more evening movies al fresco, Yonge-Dundas Square has lined up dance musicals for its August 2011 outdoor film screenings on Tuesday nights. Many of the August “Tuesdays at Sunset” evenings’ feature double bills so the start time for those films has been pushed forward to the dinner hour. Seating is provided on a first-come, first-serve basis.
- Saturday Night Fever, Tuesday, August 9, 2011, 8:30 p.m. to 10:28 p.m. John Travolta stars in his breakout movie as Tony Manero, the hardware assistant who longs for success as a disco dancer in Manhattan.
- Mad Hot Ballroom and Strictly Ballroom, Tuesday, August 16, 2011, 7 p.m. to 10:20 p.m. In the first film of the double bill, students in New York City compete in ballroom dancing competitions while in the second film directed by Baz Luhrmann, a dancer takes a risk by partnering with an unattractive dance partner in hopes of winning a competition.
- Chicago and All That Jazz, Tuesday, August 23, 2011, 6:30 p.m. to 10:26 p.m. Rene Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Richard Gere star in the first double bill feature about two chanteuses convicted of murder who seek publicity to free them from jail. Zeta-Jones won an Academy Award for her role and the movie won the best picture Oscar. The second movie is an autobiographical look at the life of choreographer Bob Fosse and his yo-yoing between drug dependency and womanizing.
- Rize and How She Move, Tuesday, August 30, 2011, 7 to 10 p.m. Rize is a Dave Chapelle documentary about the dance forms, krumping and clowning while the second bill is about a high school student who returns to her crime-ridden neighbourhood and learns step dancing.
