The sales tax on clothing and shoes varies from state to state. In Pennsylvania, the 6% sales tax is exempt on most clothing and footwear while New York has recently exempted their 4% sales tax on both clothing and footwear less than $55. In addition, the Canadian government announced that effective June 1, 2012, if you stay across the border for a period of 24-48 hours, you can bring up to $200 in tax exempt goods back to Canada. This has increased from the previous $50 in tax exempt goods. Further, travellers staying in the U.S. for longer than 48 hours will be able to bring back $800 in tax exempt goods (previously $400).

    • Hi Jackie, Sandy’s Bus Tours goes to Grove City for the day so you would be back in Toronto sometime in the evening. I think you can bring back $50 worth of goods without paying taxes although I’m advised that some border officers will allow more.
