Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and internationally-acclaimed Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky will co-host the 10th annual Waterkeeper Gala at Corus Quay on February 7, 2012. Lake Ontario Waterkeeper was created by Mark Mattson and Krystyn Tully as a result of the contaminated-water tragedy in Walkerton, Ontario that resulted in seven deaths. Supporters of Lake Ontario Waterkeeper including Tragically Hip’s Gord Downie, former Edmonton Oiler and coach Kevin Lowe, Olympic skier Karen Percy Lowe, Giller Prize winner Joseph Boyden, media executive Denise Donlon, National Geographic explorer Wade Davis and physician-scientist Dr. Joe MacInnis will attend the gala and art auction.
Lake Ontario Waterkeeper, an advocacy group and registered Canadian charity, is the first Ontario initiative to be included in Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.’s Waterkeeper Alliance, an international network of over 200 watershed protection groups. Lake Ontario Waterkeeper’s mission is to ensure Lake Ontario’s water is swimmable, drinkable and fishable.
While tickets to the $500-per-head fundraising event are sold out, individuals who wish to place a bid on the art to be auctioned may still have an opportunity to attend the gala; they should contact Allie Kosela at 416-861-1237 or allie@waterkeeper.ca to discuss. The artwork to be auctioned at the gala will be available for preview at Waddington’s, 275 King St. E., before the event.
