“Come on people now / Shine on your brother / Everybody get together / Try and love one another right now.” The iconic 60s anthem, “Get Together,” by The Youngbloods captured a mood of brotherly love whose message is more relevant than ever in the shifting global environment of 2013. If you want to reincarnate the spirit of the ‘Summer of Love,’ you can  embrace your inner hippy at one of several summer music festivals in southern Ontario. The following music festivals are within an hour’s drive of Toronto and span all music genres.

The Mariposa Folk Festival

Taking place at Tudhope Park on Lake Couchiching from July 5-7, 2013, the Mariposa Folk Festival will feature Arlo Guthrie, Randy Bachman with The Sadies, Kathleen Edwards, Murray McLauchlan, Bahamas, Family of the Year, MAZ, the Krueger Brothers and many other performers. A Friday evening pass is $55, Saturday pass is $95, Sunday pass is $95, weekend pass for 25+ is $95, weekend pass for ages 19-24 is $59 and weekend pass for 13-18 is $15.

Hillside Festival

Catch a wide variety of music genres at the Hillside Festival at Guelph Lake Island with performers including Yukon Blonde, The Darcys, World Party, Whitehorse, The Boo Radley Project, Martha Wainwright, July Talk, Jim Guthrie, House of Velvet, Diamond Rings, Colin Stetson, Aidan Knight and others. Festival goers can also sample an international food market featuring Thai food, organic dairy, Greek food, Ethiopian cuisine, Indian food, salsa, dumplings and sausage. Tickets are Friday $45 + HST and service charges, Saturday or Sunday $75 + HST and service charges and 12 and under Free. Weekend passes are sold out. Edgefest ’13

Downsview Park will host Edgefest ’13 on Wed., July 31, 2013 at 11 a.m. featuring The Lumineers, Band of Horses, The Neighbourhood, Monster Truck, Mother Mother, Dinosaur Bones, Capital Cities, Wake Owl, July Talk, Twin Forks, Great Bloomers, Hey Marseilles and others. Early bird tickets are available at Ticketmaster for $63.25 and $52.75.

Havelock Country Jamboree

The 24th Havelock Annual Country Jamboree takes place August 15-18, 2013 in Havelock, one-and-a-half hour’s east of Toronto. Performers for 2013 include Reba McEntire, Trace Adkins, Travis Tritt, Kix Brooks, Wynonna & The Big Noise, The Charlie Daniels Band, Kathy Mattea, Gord Bamford, Josh Thompson, Bobby Bare, Small Town Pistols, Dallas Smith, Tara Oram and others. Early bird tickets, which are on sale until June 15, are Adult weekend $235, youth (10-15) weekend $130 and one day ticket $115. Reserved camping from August 10-19, 2012 is $610 for two adults and includes admission to shows.
