Laya Spa and Yoga recently opened its doors in the trendy West Queen West neighbourhood and I attended their opening. What’s unique about Laya is the day spa combines Ayurvedic-inspired body care treatments with private yoga so you can treat yourself to a yoga class, an Abhyanga massage and a make-up refresh by the in-house makeup artist—all under one roof.

The spa itself is a welcome retreat from the frenetic pace of Toronto, blending Moroccan and North African touches in a modern space.

“Our concept is inspired by Ayurveda, an ancient Hindu science of life,” says owner Alessandra De Oliveira. Laya Spa and Yoga is not the typical day spa, it is a place where well-being and beauty converge, offering clients a heightened experience in relaxation.”

The Brazilian native and long-time Toronto resident has redesigned the space to include a number of Ayurveda-inspired treatments such as Indian head massage, Abhayanga Massage, Chakra Therapy and Aura Cleanse. The Ayurveda Facial, a unique treatment that stimulates the marama points (pressure points) for better efficiency of the skin and body, includes a body rocking technique that brings the client into a deep state of relaxation. After one of these treatments, you can step into Laya’s co-ed steam room and decompress. Some of Laya’s spa packages include a light lunch from a local Queen Street restaurant. The opening event was catered by Torito, which provided delicious raw and organic appetizers to nibble on.

Claiming to offer Toronto’s most authentic Brazilian wax, Laya also offers traditional treatments like pedicures and manicures, massage therapy, wraps, hair removal and facials. A lymphatic cleanse treatment, which can be excellent for reducing cellulite, will be offered soon.

Supporting the yoga community by renting private space at reasonable rates to independent teachers and their students, Laya Spa and Yoga also offers daily yoga for those who prefer smaller classes with room to stretch.
