With the mild Toronto weather tempting us into believing that spring is imminent, thoughts of planting seeds and bulbs that will flourish into flowers and vegetables later in the summer are rampant. If you could use a few gardening tips before you start digging into the ground, these gardening seminars in Toronto will help you learn about native plants, container gardening, urban composting and bugs in the garden:

Uniiverse’s The Green Thumb Series

Uniiverse will be offering the following gardening seminars at 111 Jarvis Street (at Lombard Street). Tickets are $10 for each class:

  • Start Your Backyard Garden with Brendan Ferguson on March 11, 2013 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Urban Composting with Brendan Ferguson on March 12, 2013 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Spring Seed Starting Workshop with Chris Wong on March 13, 2013 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
  • Indoor Vegetable Garden Workshop with Scott Sniedzins on March 14, 2013 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Container Gardening Seminar

Hosted by Toronto and Region Conservation, this free gardening workshop at Taylor Memorial Library, 1440 Kingston Road, will teach you how to choose the right containers, what soil works best for balcony and patio containers and will include a hands-on soil demonstration. Bring a clean yogourt container to bring home seeds and soil. Good Bugs, Bad Bugs Seminar

Creating a Beautiful Garden with Native Plants

Lush Lawn The Organic Way

Finding it challenging to achieve the perfect lawn without using pesticides? Lush Lawn The Organic Way, a free gardening workshop held at Weston Library, 2 King Street (at Weston Rd.) on Thursday, April 25, 2013 from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., will teach you about choosing the right grass varieties and how to mow, fertilize and water your lawn for lush results. Greening Your Grounds

Learn how to add native plants to your garden at this free seminar at Markham Museum, 9350 Markham Road on Saturday, May 4, 2013 from 10 a.m. to noon. Although the event is free, registration is required by calling the Markham Contact Centre at 905-477-5530. Supervision for children 3 and up will be provided.

Pollinator Gardens Galore Workshop

Learn what plants provide pollen and nectar to attract native birds, bees and butterflies to your garden at this workshop on Monday, May 6, 2013 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Toronto Botanical Garden, Garden Hall, 777 Lawrence Avenue East.
