Berthiaume’s play, The Flood Thereafter, was performed earlier this fall at the Berkeley Street Theatre.
Starring Kate Corbett, Francois Klanfer, Ryan Cunningham and Grace Lynn Kung and directed by Ted Witzel, Yukonstyle focuses on three roommates weathering the harrowing Whitehorse winter against the backdrop of the televised Robert Pickton murder trial in 2007. Berthiaume was inspired to write the play after spending a winter in the Yukon. The play highlights younger Canadians who are not so concerned with what it means to be Canadian, but are simply trying to eke out a living amidst snow, mountains and murderers.
Translated by Nadine Desrochers, the set, designed by Gillan Gallow, is cold and remote, adaptable to both indoor and outdoor scenes, and attempts to replicate the beauty and brutality of winter in the Yukon.
Yukonstyle will be on stage at the Berkeley Street Theatre from October 13-27, 2013 (opening night is October 17, 2013). Performances are Tuesday through Saturday at 8 p.m. with matinees on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m. Yukonstyle is 95 minutes with no intermission. Tickets are $22 to $49 and can be purchased at the box office, online or by calling 416-368-3110.
