On the way up to stay at a friend’s cottage on Crystal Lake, my friend and I decided to stop for a late lunch in Bobcaygeon, Ontario. Since we were both in the mood for fish, we chose Just For The Halibut Restaurant on King Street in Bobcaygeon. We stopped in at about 3:30 on a Sunday afternoon and the restaurant wasn’t super busy.
Just For The Halibut is a full-fledged restaurant, as opposed to a fish and chips joint, although they do offer take out. Specializing in halibut and other types of fish and chips, their menu also includes P.E.I. Mussels, Lobster & Crab Cakes, New York Striploin, Pan Fried Pickerel, Steak and Onion on a Panini, Sesame Thai Chicken Salad, Hail the Kale Salad and a daily homemade soup. You can also choose from their nine craft beers on tap. Our server informed us that Just For The Halibut’s burgers are a really popular item on the menu. Nevertheless, we opted for the halibut and chips at market price, which was $18.99 and included two pieces of fish.
The fish and chips arrived after about 15 minutes and we almost regretted ordering two pieces of fish each, but we decided that we could take whatever was leftover to the cottage and heat it up for dinner that night. Our fish and chips was served with coleslaw and tartar sauce.
The batter was delightfully crispy, and kept the halibut sweet and moist. The chips were quite tasty and not too greasy.
The restaurant isn’t too fancy, but it is clean and features nautical decor, which puts you in the cottage mood.
As expected, we could not finish our meals so we took the remainder with us to the cottage and the fish held up well after being reheated.
Don’t hesitate to stop by Just For The Halibut Restaurant when you are up in the Kawartha Region…you won’t be disappointed.
