If you’ve ever been to Niagara Falls, Canada, you know that it can sometimes be difficult to find a decent restaurant that is not overcharging for mediocre food. That’s why, on a recent trip to Niagara Falls, I was happy to find The Kasbah Mediterranean Qsine at 6130 Dunn Street. The Kasbah is only a 5 minute drive from the downtown core, but it’s located in a residential area, far away from the kitschy attractions of Clifton Hill.

We arrived at The Kasbah on a Monday night in late August and noticed they had a patio out front. We decided to dine indoors because the dining room opened up on to the patio, which created an open air effect.

The Kasbah’s menu offers seafood, chicken and beef dishes, but also offers dishes such as falafel, hummus, baba ghanoush and vegetarian pasta that appeal to both vegans and vegetarians We both ordered dishes that came with a salad as a starter. We had the option of a Garden, Greek, Taboule or Caesar salad and both chose the Caesar salad.

The Kasbah’s Caesar salad was one of the better Caesar salads I’ve had in a long time. The dressing was made in house and the salad featured twizzles of delicious cheese and freshly cooked bacon.

After we had finished, the owner stopped by to check whether we enjoyed our salads. I appreciated his taking the time to inquire.

My dining partner ordered the Bacon-wrapped Scallop Shish Kabos, $20, and was surprised to find that the dish came with six large scallops. Accompanying the scallops were grilled red and green peppers, a mildly-spiced rice, roasted potatoes and tzatziki. My dining partner proclaimed the scallops fresh and tender and really enjoyed the spices used in the rice.

My Shrimp Shisk Kabob included seven large shrimps, which was amazing value for the $20 price, as well as the spiced rice, potatoes and grilled peppers. The shrimp, coated in a spicy sauce, were excellent. I also enjoyed the rice, and the house-made tzatziki. I tried the potatoes, but couldn’t really appreciate them because I was too full to finish even one of them.

We both enjoyed our meals and were so happy that we had ventured away from downtown Niagara Falls to discover this gem of a restaurant. With free parking, great food and no tourism fees (TMF, DMF or TIFF) added to our bill, The Kasbah Mediterannean Qsine is worth the drive off the beaten path.
