MealSurfers Delivers Homemade Meals to Your Door

With more and more people focusing on their health, it’s not surprising that businesses focusing on eating nutritious, home-cooked meals are becoming popular. With that in mind, MealSurfers is a new online marketplace offering home-cooked food in Toronto.  Cooks all over the city are making home-cooked meals that can be picked up or delivered to your door.

MealSurfers offers a few different meals each week in order to create a better experience. Each meal from MealSurfers includes a story behind the recipe, explaining why the chef chose this meal to cook, which adds a personal touch to connect the chef with the diner.

I was invited by the co-founder, Ali Jiwani, to sample one of the meals being offered that week on MealSurfers. I chose Pilaf, Apple and Grape Leaves Dolma made by Victoria, one of the chefs. The meal was delivered to my house just after 6:30 p.m. The recipe has a rich background: Victoria’s great grandfather had been a prisoner at an internment camp in Russia. Barely surviving, his wife sent him the Dolma and Pilaf to keep him from starving. The dates, prunes and raisins in the pilaf contain high amounts of Vitamin C, which kept Victoria’s great grandfather healthy.

The Dolma featured grape leaves stuffed with beef and herbs and served with sour cream, as well as a stuffed apple with rice, while the pilaf included white rice, dates, prunes, raisins, walnuts, honey, sugar and butter. Everything was delicious. I particularly loved the pilaf with all of the iron-rich dried fruits.

Victoria is a graduate of George Brown College Chef School and has worked at La Societe, Bistro Gilead and other restaurants as a pasty and banquet chef. Several of the other chefs are George Brown College Chef School graduates, while other chefs participating in MealSurfers are simply passionate cooks. The types of meals offered include Canadian, Italian, Indian, gluten-free, Fusion, Middle Eastern, European and Greek.

MealSurfers allows cooks to sell their own creations and build a digital presence. They can set their own availability, minimums, prices, and items. If you want to open your own online store to sell your meals, visit MealSurfers.

  1. I really wish they had these services in Calgary! I have a crazy work schedule and sometimes what I end up eating is not so healthy; this would be so much better!
