Makes about
2 cups (500 mL)

Sweet strawberries and tart orange perfectly balance the mild-tasting Swiss chard in this yummy smoothie, and açai raises its nutritional value to a new level (see Juice Guru’s Tip, below). Swiss chard delivers an abundance of provitamins A and K, potassium, and decent amounts of vitamin C, magnesium and manganese. This smoothie will help to regulate blood sugar, promote good bone health and provide antioxidant support.

1 1⁄2 cups strawberries (fresh or frozen)
3 oranges, peeled and quartered
3 stalks celery
3 cups firmly packed chopped Swiss chard leaves
2 tbsp organic açai berry powder

1. In a blender, combine strawberries, oranges, celery, Swiss chard and açai powder. Blend at high speed until smooth. Serve immediately.

Juice Guru’s Tip
Açai berries contain an extraordinary amount of antioxidants that protect the tissues and cells of the body, as well as a wide array of phytonutrients, which makes it one of the most popular superfoods among health enthusiasts. Phytonutrients are natural chemicals found in all plant foods. Unlike vitamins and minerals, these phytochemicals don’t necessarily help keep us alive, but they may help prevent disease and keep the body working properly.

  2. I love a juice as an afternoon snack. A juicer is on my wish list but I have a hand blender that works.

  3. I am not sure about juicing. I bought a book on the subject but my brother was so enthralled with the book before I even had a chance to flip through it that I gave it to him. I would certainly love to try it for myself.
