Do you enjoy yoga or Pilates or maybe both? You are in good company! Both have been around for a long time and their popularity is increasing. I enjoy both types of exercise so when Torontonicity was invited to Solis Movement for a yoga or Pilates session of our choice, I grabbed my mat and hurried over (remembering to take ujjayi breath, of course).

As I entered the studio, the cares of the world and the hassles of the TTC simply evaporated as the relaxed vibe of the studio beckoned me. This is a place where you can be at peace and develop your body and mind. The studio is a bright, welcoming space. The warmth feels so good – like you are soaking up the warm goodness of sunshine.

On my first visit, I took a yogalates class taught by the very lovely Emma. Yogalates is a fusion of two of the best exercise systems: yoga and Pilates. This combination develops tone and strength in the major muscle groups, boosts stamina, flexibility and balance. This class incorporates exercises for all parts of the body. It also helps to calm the mind and provides relaxation, de-stressing the body as a whole.

Emma explained each step clearly so that, even if you have never done the moves before, you’d be able to follow. I have taken many yoga classes before but only a couple of Pilates classes prior to this class, so some of the moves were totally new to me. It was great to feel different muscles being used and strengthened in a low-impact movement. During the class, you feel the emphasis on proper postural alignment and core strength.

While most heated yoga studios use forced air to heat their rooms, Solis Movement uses infrared heat which provides a therapeutic, deep penetrating form of heat. Infrared heat is said to help expel toxins and pollutants from the body. Hot yoga can also give you glowing skin and aids in weight loss. The benefits are fabulous. We love looking and feeling our best!

Some of the classes currently offered at Solis Movement:

• Mom & Baby Yoga

• Power Vinyasa Flow

• Hot HIIT Pilates

• Bikram Yoga

• Yin Yoga

• Yogalates (not to be mistaken for yoga with lattes)

I had a nice chat with Emma after the session and she was happy to share tips with me about Pilates, running, and other exercises. The studio had a nice hang-out-and-socialize vibe.

Take the time to take care of you so that you can better take care of your world.
