In a time when social distancing remains the order of the day, many people are choosing to remain at home, except to go out for groceries or for a walk. That means parents and children are inside more than at any other time in almost a century. It’s no wonder that people are feeling more anxious, unsettled, and unsure of what to do with themselves.
Now is a great time to sign your kids up for online music lessons. Popular online lessons include piano and guitar lessons for kids online . What are the benefits of online music lessons? Read further to find out.

Something Fun and Practical to Do at Home
There’s only so much television, social media, and video games before even kids become saturated. Choosing to introduce something new into the mix can inject some needed fun into the day.
Online music lessons can do that. They provide a break from what may have become a dull routine of homework and video games. Online music lessons also provide the opportunity to interact with someone other than people living in your home. At the same time, the training offers the chance to learn a new hobby that will provide hours of entertainment.
Learning Music Increases Intelligence
Learning how to play an instrument offers many intellectual benefits. Research demonstrates that “musicians have significantly more grey matter in several brain regions (Schlaug et al 2005), and the effects of music lessons seem to increase with the intensity of training.” What’s so great about grey matter? People with high IQ scores have significantly more grey matter than people with lower IQs.
Developing a Skill To Provide Lifelong Enjoyment
As you and the kids begin to pick up the basics of the guitar, piano or other instruments, it’s only natural that you’ll want to share your music with others. As someone who studied piano for 9 years, I can attest to the lifelong benefits of being able to play an instrument. I remember sitting down to the piano at Christmastime to play some popular carols while my family sang along. Who doesn’t love a person who can pick up a guitar and play popular songs at parties? Once you learn the basics of your instrument, even with the pandemic, you’ll be able to play your instrument for your family or friends while online. Think of how nice it would be to learn a new piece and then play it for those loved ones. The enjoyment that comes from offering the music will only be surpassed by the enjoyment of those who hear it.
Building Self-Confidence
Learning to play an instrument involves learning to read music. Studies have revealed that children who receive musical training develop the area of the brain related to reasoning and language. Developing this set of skills will result in an increased sense of confidence, something that will definitely help you on days that seem to be particularly challenging. Long after COVID-19 ceases to be a threat, that confidence will remain.
Need some inspiration to learn to play an instrument? Nicholas McCarthy was born without a right hand, but learned to play the piano with only his left-hand. He graduated from the Royal College of Music in London.Â

What a great idea especially at a time like this. Perfect for kids and adults too to learn a new skill
I so wish I kept up with the recorder as a child. Lockdown has certainly improved skills we never thought we could manage and also helped with the isolation process.
I agree that it’s been a great time to improve our skills or learn new ones! Cheers, Lori
Yes it is so true. Music is golden and it is important to be able to enjoy it the fullest
I completely agree. Now is a great time to learn an instrument! Cheers, Lori
I love the idea of music lessons online! I studied music for years growing up and I can only imagine how much easier it would have been (especially for my parents!) if I had been able to take my lessons online instead.
I learned to play the piano when I was a little girl (my parents wanted me to learn) but my real passion was learning to play the guitar. I guess it is never too late to get back to playing the guitar again. It is cool that you can now take advantage of online classes!
This is perfect for the times we’re in. I definitely have been trying to improve on skills that I have.
