Samaira’s Kitchen

Samaira’s Kitchen opened over a year ago on Queen Street East at the site of the former Queen City Pizza. Samaira’s Kitchen is a family-run business offering gourmet pizza, calzone, panzerotti and burgers. You can order from one of the 20 Chef’s Creation Pizzas or create your own. My favourite is the Veg Deluxe Pizza that comes with tomato sauce, mozzarella, tomatoes, mushroom, and bell peppers. If you enjoy all the toppings, you can order the Fully Loaded Pizza with tomato sauce, mozzarella, mushroom, bell peppers, tomatoes, onion, ham, bacon, and pepperoni. Samaira’s Kitchen does not use a food delivery service; you can order directly from their website. Samaira’s Kitchen is located at 1056 Queen Street East, 416-466-0888, and is open Mon to Sun.

Kibo Sushi House

Have a hankering for some sushi? Kibo Sushi on Queen Street East at Jones is my go-to in Leslieville when I have a craving for Japanese food. I love their Tempura Bento Box, $12.95. I usually order the shrimp tempura because the batter is crispy and light, but you can also choose shrimp & veggie, veggie or tofu tempura. The Bento Box also comes with rice and salad. Another item I enjoy is the Kibo California, $10.95, which features California rolls with torched salmon and scallop. I have found the sushi is always fresh at this Kibo Sushi location. Kibo Sushi House at 1169 Queen Street East, 416-792-6210, is open Mon to Sun. They use Uber Eats food delivery. Read my blog post about Kibo Sushi on Parliament Street.

Shish

When I worked for the Ministry of the Attorney General at Bay and Gerrard Streets, there was a hole-in-the-wall Middle Eastern take-out restaurant that served the best shawarma. That was my introduction to this spicy roasted chicken pita and I have been a fan ever since. So I was thrilled to find Shish on Queen Street East at Leslie Street and have included it as the best take out and delivery in Toronto east end. Shish’s chicken shawarma is a huge portion for the money and rivals the shawarma I used to order at work. They also offer beef shawarma, falafel, chicken or lamb kofta wrap, souvlaki wrap and eggplant wrap. Shish is open Mon to Sun and is located at 1225 Queen Street East, 416-466-0404. They use Foodora delivery service.

Sandy’s Restaurant

When I move to a new neighbourhood, I always try and find the best Chinese food restaurants. It took us trying several other Chinese food restaurants before we learned about Sandy’s Restaurant. Located on Danforth Avenue at Woodbine Avenue, Sandy’s Restaurant offers Chinese food that features fresh ingredients and good-size portions. One of the measures for me in determining whether I like a Chinese food restaurant is how they prepare their Cantonese Chow Mein, one of my favourite dishes. Sandy’s Restaurant’s version is made with the crispy egg noodles that I like, as well as good servings of shrimp, beef, chicken, broccoli, carrots, mushrooms, Baby Bok Choy…check, check, check, check, check! Their spring rolls, $1.90, are homemade with a light, but crispy batter and are a must-order. Another item I recommend is their Shrimp with Mixed Vegetables, $12.99. The dish contains a generous portion of plump, juicy shrimp with fresh veggies including broccoli, peppers, carrots and mushrooms. Sandy’s Restaurant is located at 2003 Danforth Avenue, 416-699-8812 and is open Mon to Sun. If your order is over $40 before, you’ll receive a free food item (we received delicious chicken wings). They do not use a food delivery service.

Cumin Fine Indian Kitchen

Many Toronto east-enders rave about the food at Cumin Fine Indian Kitchen and I am one of them! We have ordered from Cumin Kitchen a few times and each time the food has been delicious. Some of our favourite items are the Pakora Platter, $9 that comes with Onion Bhaji (fried onion fritters in a chickpea batter), samosas, Aloo Tikka, and kabobs. We also love their Royal Tandoori Shrimp, $18, which is Black Tiger Shrimp in a yogurt chili-garlic sauce. For a vegan option, we have tried their Channa Masala and it is a tasty blend of chickpeas, tomatoes and garam masala. Make sure you order their garlic naan as it is crispy and light. The portions are ample and we usually have left-overs. Cumin Kitchen is located at 1820 Danforth Avenue (at Coxwell Avenue), $647-748-5522 and is open Mon to Sun. You can order directly from the restaurant or from Skip The Dishes.

Descendant Pizza

If thin-crust pizza doesn’t cut it for you (sorry for the pun!), you’ll definitely want to try Descendant Pizza. This Detroit-style pizza is made in a deep dish so the crust is super thick yet crispy. Our favourite pizza from Descendant is the Truff-ghi, which is made with cheese blend, roasted garlic cremini mushrooms, caramelized onions, double-smoked bacon, white truffle sauce and grana padano. At $20 for a small pizza (8″ x 10″), you can definitely find cheaper pizza in Leslieville, but it won’t be as delicious. Keep in mind also that this pizza is very filling. If you normally eat three pieces of pizza, you will probably have room for only two pieces. Descendant Pizza is located at 1168 Queen Street (just west of Leslie Street), 647-347-1168 and is open Tues to Sun.
