July is finally here – one of my favourite months. Well, that’s because it’s my birthday month! Also, I’m going to a cottage at the end of the month and I’m really looking forward to that! I really enjoy relaxing during the dog days of summer by reading a good book by the pool or lake, watching a great series on Netflix or enjoying dinner on a gorgeous Toronto patio like Harriet’s Rooftop. I’ve rounded up some of my favourite series, books, beauty and fashion items and would love to share them with you. Continue reading to find out what I’m crushing on in July 2022.
Pretty Hard Cases TV Series on Netflix Canada
After watching a slew of crime dramas on Netflix, Pretty Hard Cases is a refreshing change. This Canadian police comedy drama is a bit lighter than your typical police procedural TV series due to the fabulous comedic chemistry of its co-stars Meredith MacNeill (Baroness von Sketch Show; This Hour Has 22 Minutes) and Adrienne C. Moore (Cindy “Black Cindy” Hayes on Orange Is The New Black) as Detective Sam (Samantha) Wazowski and Detective Kelly Duff respectively. The two detectives are as different as oil and water and each have complicated personal lives (what else is new?). Despite their differences, they develop a strong bond which helps them not only solve their cases, but maintain sanity in a highly stressful career. Don’t think that this is simply a comedy – there are very strong story lines surrounding guns and gangs and drug smuggling crimes. The wonderful Karen Robinson (Schitt’s Creek) plays Unit Commander Edwina Shanks. Season 1 is on Netflix Canada and Season 2 is on CBC Gem.
One of the most important ingredients to look for when you are shopping for anti-aging beauty products is Vitamin C. Vitamin C is known for its ability to prevent damage from free radicals. Vivier Quintiserum Antioxidant Serum contains 15% Vitamin C, Vitamin E and 5 peptides, Vivier Quintiserum Antioxidant Serum firms your skin and reduces signs of aging. This serum boost collagen production. A little goes a long way – I use about 3 drops in the morning before applying my moisturizer.
I got a chance to try on the new 36mm Seastar 1000 Quartz Watch from Tissot at a recent media event at Grand Bizarre. This diver’s watch is not only high performance, but is super stylish. I tried on the model with the blue dial, but it also comes with a black or white dial with yellow-gold or silver details and a silver steel bracelet. You can switch the strap to a silicone strap, which comes in white, orange, light blue and black. This elegant watch is water-resistant up to 300m/1000 feet. It also has a uni-directional rotating bezel for timing dives. The 36mm Seastar 1000 Quartz Watch retails for $550.
One of the new Canadian fiction books for summer 2022 that is included on many most anticipated book lists is Anne Lazurko’s What Is Written on the Tongue. This is another book with a narrative that begins during World War II. The epic story follows Sam, a 20-year-old Dutch resident who is sent to a prison camp by the Nazis for evading the draft. After surviving harrowing conditions at the camp and witnessing several friends die, Sam manages to be selected to work on a farm before the Allies free him. A few years later, he is drafted and sent to the Dutch-colonized Island of Java in the Dutch East Indies to control the uprising of the Indonesian independence movement. As Sam witnesses his Dutch comrades committing similar acts against the Indonesian people as the Nazis formerly did, we see Sam grappling with moral questions of right and wrong, as well as learning about the loyalty of true friendship. This historical fiction novel is difficult to read at times due to the inhuman acts and extreme deprivation of war, but it also vividly presents the extreme capacity of the human spirit to love and hate his fellow beings. What Is Written on the Tongue by Anne Lazurko is published by ECW Press and is $24.95.
