We are in the middle of summer and hopefully, you will be taking vacation soon if you haven’t already. Whether you are looking for movies to watch on those rainy days at the cottage or want to know the best TV series on Netflix Canada for kicking back on hot summer nights, continue reading to find out what to watch on Netflix Canada in summer 2022.
The Stranger on Netflix Canada
I have been enjoying a lot of British TV series on Netflix lately so I was pleased to stumble upon The Stranger. The story begins when a stranger appears with some shocking news for Adam Price about his wife Corinne. When Corinne learns that Adam has been told her secret, she disappears. The stranger visits several other characters and shares confidential information with them as well! As the series progresses, we find out that most of the characters have secrets they don’t want revealed – I guess we all have our secrets, right? The eight-episode series is an adaptation of the bestselling book by the same name by Harlan Coben. I was glued to this one and I liked that it wasn’t a long, drawn-out series!
Borgen on Netflix Canada
This Danish political drama will quickly captivate your attention. Birgitte Nyborg Christensen has just been named Denmark’s prime minister after a convoluted election process. She faces sexism and other ploys to undercut her abilities that come with being the country’s first female political leader. Meanwhile, her husband, Philip, a university professor, must make huge adjustments to his lifestyle in order to support his wife. Birgitte’s press secretary, Kasper Juul, is razor sharp at his job, but he has ghosts in his closet that affect all of his personal relationships. TV news anchor Katrine Fonsmark, who covers the nation’s political affairs, takes a hardline in her journalism, often clashing with her submissive boss, Torben. The first three seasons of Borgen were aired from 2010-2013 while season four aired for the first time in 2022.
Pretty Hard Cases TV Series on Netflix Canada
After watching a slew of crime dramas on Netflix, Pretty Hard Cases is a refreshing change. This Canadian police comedy drama is a bit lighter than your typical police procedural TV series due to the fabulous comedic chemistry of its co-stars Meredith MacNeill (Baroness von Sketch Show; This Hour Has 22 Minutes) and Adrienne C. Moore (Cindy “Black Cindy” Hayes on Orange Is The New Black)Â as Detective Sam (Samantha) Wazowski and Detective Kelly Duff respectively. The two detectives are as different as Walter White and Jesse Pinkman and have complicated personal lives, which seems to be a common trope in TV series these days. Despite their differences, they develop a strong bond which helps them not only solve their cases, but maintain sanity in a highly stressful career. This isn’t simply a comedy – there are very strong story lines surrounding guns and gangs and drug smuggling crimes that will keep you riveted. Karen Robinson (Schitt’s Creek) plays no-nonsense Unit Commander Edwina Shanks. You can catch Season 1 on Netflix Canada and Season 2 on CBC Gem.
The Staircase on Netflix Canada
The Staircase is a documentary of crime writer Michael Peterson, who was charged with the murder of his wife, Kathleen. Peterson told police that he and his wife had been drinking wine when she fell down the stairs in their home and later died. Ironically, while living with his wife in Germany years before, his best friend’s wife met her death in the same fashion although the German police ruled her death an accident. While married, Peterson had sexual relationships with men, which the prosecution argued could have been the cause of impassioned arguments between the Petersons. The series covers the trial, conviction and appeal and the devastating effects it had on Peterson and his children. The TV series doesn’t have the crisp pace of Hollywood dramas, but it is fascinating nonetheless since it documents a true crime case.

Hinterland on Netflix Canada
Set in Wales, this police procedural series focuses on Detective Chief Inspector Tom Mathias who is called to investigate the suspicious disappearance of Helen Jenkins. Jenkins was once the manager of a children’s home. DCI Mathias, along with his partner Detective Inspector Mared Rhys, who have a prickly business relationship, conduct inspections with former residents of the home who advise them of the illegal activities that took place. The series has three seasons that originally aired from 2013 to 2016. As a side note, the cinematography of the rugged Wales coastline is gorgeous.

Hi Mia, I hope you found something you will enjoy on my list. Cheers, Lori
I watched a crime documentary on the Micheal Peterson case. It was surprising how far police would go to prove someone murdered another person.
Hi Renee, I know. The police committed several unethical practices to try to prove that Peterson was guilty! Cheers, Lori
This is a great list of shows! I am personally looking forward to watching The Stranger. I just finished reading the book and would love to see the tv adaptation.
Hi Clarice, I didn’t read the book, but the TV adaptation of The Stranger was excellent! Cheers, Lori
