Replace Drafty Windows and Doors

Before the cold weather arrives, do a walk around the interior and exterior of your home to determine if there are any leaks or drafts. Drafts from windows and doors may be able to be eliminated with the application of weatherstripping; however, if your windows are very old, you may need to replace them. Consider contacting a reputable Toronto window and door company such as Corpnova.com.

Lower the Temperature on Your Thermostat

Many of us take for granted the temperature we enjoy in our homes, but with rising gas and oil prices, it’s important to be aware of heating costs. Lowering the temperature by 1 degree per day can save you 2% on your heating bill. You may have to get used to wearing a cardigan or hoodie in the winter, but the savings you’ll see on your heating bill should be enough of an incentive.

Replace the Filter on Your Furnace

An easy and inexpensive way to reduce your heating bill is to replace the filter on your furnace. A dirty filter will result in the air flow from your furnace being restricted, which means it will operate inefficiently. A clean filter will also eliminate dust from circulating in your furnace, which could cause it to break down. A dirty filter will increase the cost of maintaining your furnace. Perhaps most importantly, dirty filters are also not good for your health!

Ensure Air Vents Are Free of Obstructions

Obstructed air vents are also responsible for restricting airflow so that the warm air does not circulate in your room. Move any furniture that is covering up air vents to allow warm air to flow freely.

Reduce Use of Kitchen and Bathrooms Fans

Did you know that using bathroom or kitchen fans take a lot of warm air with them? Of course they are needed to eliminate odors, but don’t run them for too long or you’ll find that your room temperature is cooler as a result.

Following the above tips should help if you are wondering how to save money on your heating bill. Please let me know in the comment section if you have more suggestions.

  1. I never thought about the fans taking heat with them. That is some good advice right there. The rest we usually do every year before starting the heater.

  2. These are great tips Lori. I rarely use the kitchen fan and I’m always cooking in the kitchen. Thank goodness!

  3. I remember the heating bill being really high. Here it’s the air bill. It can get pretty high and it’s hot year round.
