Diptyque, a luxury French brand, opened its first Canadian store at Yorkdale Shopping Centre last week and Torontonicity was invited to the media preview. The company, which makes luxury skincare products, perfumes, candles and diffusers, was founded by three artists who incorporated artistry into every aspect of their business.

Upon arrival, I was impressed with the gorgeous interior, which includes a floor-to-ceiling fireplace, original paintings on the walls and dark wood shelves. I spoke to Julien, a Vice President of Marketing, who gave me some background about the brand. The store manager, Mark, kindly selected some eau de parfums for me to try. I told him that I loved woody scents and he suggested I try “Orpheon,” which has notes of juniper berry, jasmine, tonka bean and cedarwood. I loved this fragrance! I also was intoxicated by “34,” a spicy-woody scent, with notes of black currant, fig leaves, cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, rose, sandalwood, amber and patchouli.

Diptyque has the most gorgeous diffusers – they truly are art pieces that also provide function.

I was provided with a selection of products to try at home. The scent from the candles is so strong that it permeates throughout our living room even when the candle is unlit! I also received Diptyque’s Hair Mist in Do Son, which is an earthy floral featuring Tuberose, orange leaves, jasmine, pink peppercorns, musk and Marine accord. I’m not a fan of floral scents that are too sweet, but I like Do Son since the notes are subtle.

If you’re wondering what the word “Diptyque” means, you may be familiar with “triptique,” which is a term used to describe three panels in art. Diptyque, thus, means two panels, and the term was adopted as the company name because the original store at 34 boulevard Saint-Germain in Paris had a two-panelled storefront.

The company plans to open more stores in Canada including Montreal and Vancouver. If you are looking for a gift for a person who is hard to buy for, you will definitely want to stop by Diptyque – the last word in luxury!
