Second City Toronto has officially opened at their new One York Street location and just in time for the holiday season. Torontonicity was invited to the grand opening party on November 30, 2022 to check out their new home.

The long-running Toronto comedy club, which has spawned stars including John Candy, Catherine O’Hara, Martin Short, Eugene Levy, Mike Myers, Dan Aykroyd, Gilda Radner, Andrea Martin, Colin Mochrie and Patrick McKenna, was bumped from their location on Mercer Street in 2019 when the property was sold to a condo developer. Second City Toronto had been temporarily performing at The Comedy Bar on Danforth Avenue. Many people will be excited that Second City Toronto has returned to downtown Toronto just in time for the holidays. A comedy performance at Second City Toronto will surely be one of the most popular holiday events in Toronto for 2022.
The first thing you’ll notice about the new space is how large it is! The new location features several theatres including the Mainstage Theatre, Theatre ’73 and the John Candy Box Theatre, which features part of the original stage from their home at The Old Firehall. There is also a training room for a variety of improv classes, as well as a bar and restaurant with food provided by Oliver & Bonacini. One York Street is conveniently connected to The PATH.

At the opening party, we were treated to cocktails and tasty appetizers from Oliver & Bonacini and we had a preview of one of the new shows in the Mainstage Theatre. It was perfect to relax and enjoy a few laughs and then return to the party! I loved the skit involving one of Canada’s largest telecommunication providers! When the show was overe, we returned to the party and enjoyed listening to the Toronto Raptors DJ spinning tunes for party-goers.
Have a look at highlights from the grand opening party:
