I love getting out of the city, especially in the summer! That’s why I was excited when I was invited to sample the lunch menu at XXI Chophouse at The Doctor’s House in Kleinburg. The village of Kleinburg is home to the McMichael Canadian Art Collection and is located in the northwest section of Vaughan. Although it is a fair drive from Toronto’s Upper Beach neighbourhood where I live, it was pleasant to leave the city behind to relax in the charming village of Kleinburg. We arrived at 1 p.m. on a humid Wednesday and opted to eat indoors in air-conditioned comfort with a view overlooking the pristine patio and chapel.
The Doctor’s House has been around for ages and is a popular wedding venue. I completely see why as the grounds and gardens are subdued and charming.

We were greeted promptly and our drinks order was taken. My dining guest ordered a refreshing Bellini!
For starters, my dining guest ordered the Seared Scallops while I ordered a few Raspberry Point oysters. While we waited for our food, our server arrived with a basket of freshly baked bread with an intoxicating aroma!

When the scallops arrived, we were surprised to see five large scallops on the plate since this is an appetizer. What great value! The scallops came in a delicate cauliflower puree with bacon jam. I had a taste of the scallops and they were meaty, rich and delicious. My P.E.I. oysters were fresh and refreshing on this hot day.

For the main dish, my dining partner ordered the Caesar Salad, which is made with Romaine hearts, prosciutto, croutons and Caesar dressing. She could not finish this large salad.

I ordered the Salmon and a side dish of Buffalo Brussels Sprouts. The moist salmon was a generous size and was perfectly cooked with a crispy crust and served with a Lemon Caper Sauce. I couldn’t finish the fish and decided to take the remainder home for dinner. What I loved even more was the good helping of perfectly cooked veggies placed under the salmon. Being a vegetable lover, I am always dismayed when I see only a thin carrot, one undernourished green bean and one lonely broccoli spear as the accompaniment on a dinner plate. Not the case here!

While I loved the abundant heat of the Buffalo Brussels Sprouts (and yes, it was important to have a glass of water on hand lol), they would have benefited from less salt. Otherwise, these roasted sprouts accompanied by crumbled blue cheese were addictively delicious.

After lunch, we strolled around the gardens in front of the chapel. So quiet. So charming. So peaceful.
It’s worth the drive to Kleinburg!
