Severe weather can cause devastation and damage throughout the year, but winter in Toronto has an especially strong impact. 1. Drain Your Gutters

Clogged gutters are the culprit of many problems throughout the winter. When the gutters become clogged, water cannot drain from the roof. Instead, it sits and freezes in the gutter. When the snow starts building up, the pressure on your guttering becomes dangerous. Clearing your gutters is the most basic approach to keeping them in good operating order. Remove any dirt and leaf litter from the gutters to allow water to flow freely. Check the guttering and bolts for signs of wear and tear. Keep in mind that gutters can crack or collapse so they may need to be replaced.

2. Replace Windows

If you’re noticing chilly drafts leaking into your home, you may want to replace your windows before winter. Replacing poorly performing windows can help regulate your home’s indoor climate, making it easier to keep your home warm and reducing the need to turn up the heat. Thus, windows replacement usually leads to lower energy bills.

3. Inspect the Attic Insulation

Inadequate attic insulation can cause heat to escape through your roof. As a result, any snow on your roof melts, runs down, and re-freezes as ice dams or icicles. Inadequate attic insulation also wastes heat in your home, raising your heating costs.

Therefore, it is strongly recommended to protect your pipes against the cold ahead of time.

External pipes are especially prone to burst. Outside hose pipes and spigots should be drained, turned off, and insulated. Indoor pipes should also be shielded from the elements. Keeping your home warm is important, but you should also seal up any drafts to keep internal pipes from freezing.

5. Check for Holes

In the winter, everyone wants to feel warm and comfy, and wildlife is no exception. Small animals, in particular, love attic spaces, which they may enter through small holes. Look for gaps in your walls, eaves, and attic area. Mice can squeeze through holes of 0.23 to 0.27 inches in diameter, while rats can squeeze through holes measuring 0.78 inches in diameter. That means you’ll have to be vigilant.



Run your hand along the walls or the attic ceiling to determine if there is a draft. This is an indication of a crack or hole. Sealing all openings will help to keep animals out while also preventing warm air from escaping.

6. Replace Your Air Filters

Keeping your HVAC system in good working order helps to keep your bills low and your home properly ventilated and heated. Dust can clog air filters over time, reducing their performance. Therefore, air filters should be changed on a regular basis, as often as every one to three months.

    To protect pipes from freezing in cold winter, it’s also advisable to keep your home’s temperature at a consistent 55 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. This temperature is warm enough to prevent pipes, especially those in unheated areas or against external walls, from freezing, yet it’s still moderate enough to avoid excessive energy consumption.
