The year 2023 has flown by so quickly. It’s hard to believe 2024 is on our doorstep. Canada made had lots of news headlines during 2023. Here’s a refresher of the top 15 news stories in Canada for 2023:

  1. Donald Trump is arraigned on charges

While technically this is a U.S. news story, due to the immense impact some of the decisions made by the former president had on Canadians, I’m including this in the top news stories in Canada for 2023. In April 2023, former President Donald Trump was arraigned on charges related to hush money paid to Stormy Daniels. Trump would later be arraigned on further charges related to his attempt to overturn the electoral decision.

2. CRA workers go on strike

In April 2023, just before tax filing time, Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) workers went on strike. The strike resulted in delays in processing income tax returns among other things.

3. Doug Ford proposes to move the Ontario Science Centre

In a controversial and largely unpopular move, Premier Doug Ford proposed to move the Ontario Science Centre to Ontario Place.



4. Toronto Maple Leafs advance to Second Round of Playoffs

The Buds surprised everyone by beating Tampa Bay Lightning in Round 1 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs 2023. The Leafs went on to play the Florida Panthers in Round 2, something they had not achieve in more than 21 years, but were taken out in Game 5.

5. City of Toronto Mayor John Tory resigns

City of Toronto Mayor John Tory, who had just been re-elected to a third term, resigned after revealing that he had been having an affair with a staff member in his office.

6. Biden visits Canada for the first time

President Joe Biden visited Canada for the first time in March 2023.

7. Trudeau and Biden sign an agreement to close Roxham Road, the unofficial crossing of refugees

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and President Joe Biden signed an agreement to close Roxham Road in Quebec, a popular, illegal entry point for refugees entering from the U.S. to Canada.

8. Gordon Lightfoot dies

Legendary Canadian singer Gordon Lightfoot died on May 1, 2023 at the age of 84 of natural causes.

9. David Johnston resigns as Special Rapporteur

Former Governor General of Canada David Johnston, who was appointed special rapporteur to look into China’s alleged meddling in Canadian election, resigned amidst criticism he has ties to Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation which affected his decision not to call a public inquiry.

10. Quebec Wildfires

In June 2023, wildfires in Quebec were so bad they created poor air quality in neighbouring Ontario and the northern U.S. Residents in Ontario were warned to avoid going outside for several days to avoid respiratory issues.

11. Submarine on way to view Titanic disappears

In June 2023, a submarine on voyage to see the wreck of the Titanic off the coast of Newfoundland disappeared. The submarine experienced a loss of pressure that caused it to implode. Stockton Rush, CEO of OceanGate, led the expedition in the Titan submersible.

12. Justin Trudeau Separates from Sophie

After 18 years of marriage, Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie Gregoire-Trudeau announced their separation in August 2023. The Trudeaus have three children.



13. Doug Ford reverses stance on Green Belt

In an incredible 180-degree decision, Premier Doug Ford reversed his decision to allow development on the Green Belt in Ontario.

14. Trudeau accuses Indian government of assassinating a Canadian Sikh activist

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused the Indian government of assassinating a Canadian Sikh activist, Hardeep Singh Nijar, who was shot dead outside a Sikh temple in B.C.

15. Speaker of the House Anthony Rota honours Nazi war veteran

Speaker of the House Anthony Rota resigned after inadvertently honouring a former Ukrainian soldier who fought in a Nazi division.

  1. I have to say I am less familiar with Canadian news lately. The wildfires were a big issue for us here in New York. There were lots of days with poor air quality, and it was recommended that we don’t go outside. It felt uncomfortable to breathe the smoky air just after a few minutes.

  5. So many things have happened in 2023, so many tragic things too. I know in our area alone there were so many fatalities from car accidents alone. It’s so sad everyone has to be in such a hurry.
