It’s hard to believe that January 2024 is here! Where did 2023 go? What a whirlwind that year was! January is usually a time when I seek a bit of respite after a busy December, which means I watch more movies and TV series on Netflix and find time to read. We’re lucky in Toronto this year in that the weather has been relatively mild so far. I really don’t like shovelling snow! I hope you had a great holiday (if you celebrated) and are enjoying a peaceful January. Continue reading to learn about what I’m crushing on in January 2024.

Cheetah-Inspired Paisley Motif Scarf from Melanie Lyne

I received the Cheetah-Inspired Paisley Motif Scarf from Melanie Lyne from my sister as a Christmas gift and I’ve already worn it several times. Because I introduced some neutral brown and beiges into my wardrobe this fall, I wanted a print scarf that would go with these pieces. This is the perfect scarf, plus it goes beautifully with my long off-white winter coat.

Maestro on Netflix

We watched Maestro on Netflix over the holidays and absolutely loved it! The biopic focuses on the marriage of Leonard Bernstein (Bradley Cooper is unrecognizable as the famous conductor) and Felicia Montealegre played by Carey Mulligan. Although ostensibly a biography of Bernstein’s rise to one of the most important conductors and composers of the 20th century, the film decidedly focuses on his personal life, with hardly a reference to his most famous work: West Side Story. Bernstein, who was homosexual, and Felicia had three children and remained married until her death from lung cancer in 1978. Both Cooper and Mulligan are superb in their roles and I would be surprised if they don’t win the Best Actor and Best Actress Oscars for these performances.

Garlic Parmesan Popcorn from Toronto Popcorn Company

I received a sample of Toronto Popcorn Company’s Garlic Parmesan Popcorn at a recent TIFF event and had a chance to try it over the holidays. Wow, it’s delicious and so much tastier than popcorn you buy at the grocery store! The quality of this gourmet popcorn is superior – the popcorn is puffier and crispy and you also don’t end up with the small, broken pieces that you usally find at the bottom of popcorn bags. One reason for the great quality is the popcorn is made in small batches. Be forewarned though: the Garlic Parmesan flavour is very addictive! I ate almost half a bag in one sitting!

The Maid by Nita Prose

We were reading The Maid by Nita Prose in our book club in December and I was pleasantly surprised by this novel. Molly Gray, a young woman who until recently lived with her grandmother, works as a maid at a hotel. Molly has a unique way of looking at things and some might call her socially awkward. Most of the hotel staff dislike her, primarily because she is quite diligent in her work, which puts a spotlight on their inadequacies. When Molly finds one of the esteemed hotel guests murdered in his suite, the mystery begins and we must determine who is telling the truth. A thoroughly entertaining read, which includes some important messages about how we perceive differences in other people.

  1. I will have to check out the book you mentioned. It sounds like a good one. That popcorn sounds amazing too.

  2. It’s always great when a gift not only matches your style but also complements other pieces in your closet. I can imagine it adding a touch of chic warmth to your winter outfits!
