5 Fun Places to Visit During March Break Within an Hour of Toronto

March Break will be here before we know it! This year, it takes place from Monday, March 11 to Friday, March 15, 2024. Many parents take vacation during this time to enjoy family times with their kids. If you are not headed down south to a sunny destination, you may want to consider planning a few day trips. Keep reading to find out about fun places to visit during March Break that are within an hour of Toronto:

Bruce’s Mill Conservation Area

The Sugarbush Maple Syrup Festival 2024 takes place at Bruce’s Mill Conservation Area from Saturday, March 9, 2024 to Sunday, April 7, 2024. The festival will be open during weekends and during March Break from March 11-15, 2024. This is your chance to see how maple syrup is harvested from the sap of maple trees. With warmer than usual temperatures this winter, the window of opportunity to see this process is very narrow.

Maple Syrup Demonstrations take place from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. In addition to the demonstrations, enjoy life size games, horse drawn carriage rides, and disc golf demonstrations. Purchase a variety of food options from local food trucks.

The Sugarbush Maple Syrup Festival event hours are from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Tickets must be purchased in advance. No tickets will be sold at Bruce’s Mill:
Adults (Ages 14-64): $11.50 + HST; Seniors (Ages 65+): $9.50 + HST; Children (Ages 4-13): $7.45 + HST; Children 3 years and under: Free* (with adult purchase) *excludes daycare, day camps and school groups.
Parking is $4.80 plus HST.

Winter Weekend Heritage Train Rides in Waterloo

Experience a scenic winter heritage train ride with the whole family. You will view the countryside around Kitchener-Waterloo, as well as nearby Mennonite farms then head north to Elmira. March 12, 14-16, 2024 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

The round-trip journey begins either at our Waterloo Northfield Station or at the Farmers Market Station and is 1 hour and 50 minutes.

The Waterloo Northfield Station is across the street from the ION station. No parking is available at the Waterloo Northfield Station. The Farmers Market Station is located at 330 Farmers Market Road between the St. Jacobs Farmers Market and the Value Village Shopping Centre. Free Parking is available in the Value Village parking lot located off Farmers Market Road which is adjacent to our station platform.

Royal Botanical Gardens, Burlington

The Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington is a great spot to visit during March Break 2024 as they are hosting many special events including the following:

Learn About “Nature’s Superheroes”

Learn how the unusual features of plants and animals help them to reproduce, breathe and move around, sense the world, or find food and safety in extreme environments.

Open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the RBG Centre. This is a time-ticketed event.

Explore the Imagination Playground

Kids can explore and play with uniquely shaped foam blocks in the Imagination Playground.

Open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the RBG Centre.

Imagination Playground is included in Nature’s Superheroes tickets, which is a time-ticketed event.

Watch the Escarpment Train Exhibit

RBG’s “G scale” model train experience takes you on a journey through four seasons of whimsical Canadian landscapes while telling the story of how railroads shaped our history.

Open 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Rock Garden.

Included in Rock Garden Admission or Nature’s Superheroes tickets (exhibit is 2 km down the road)

Make a Terrarium as a Family

Learn about the science of ecosystems then build your own terrarium. The workshop is available March 9, 10, 16 and 17, 2024 at 11 a.m. or 2 p.m. at RBG Centre. The cost is $30 plus HST. Space is limited.

Great Wolf Lodge Indoor Water Park, Niagara Falls

Take the family to Great Wolf Lodge and enjoy their Indoor Water Park during March Break. The water park is one of the most popular places to visit during March Break because provides fun for the whole family including:

  • Fort Mackenzie – Kids will enjoy this four-storey water fort with several slides to choose from.
  • Beaver and Squirrel Falls
  • Rainbow Lake – Jump the waves in this pool with a zero-depth entry leading to a maximum of 5 feet

Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory

Spring weather may not be here just yet, but you will certainly feel like the season has arrived when you walk through the a field of flowers while visiting Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory.

Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory exhibits many exotic bird species from around the world. Enjoy the tropical atmosphere of the conservatory while listening to the soothing songs of the birds. Birds in the conservatory include Green-Cheeked Conure, Zebra Finch, German Roller Canary, Chinese Painted Quail, Common Quail, Goldfish and Red-eared slider.

Visit Live Insect Galleries; Animals on exhibit include Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches, Giant African Millipedes, Giant Cave Cockroaches, Walking Sticks, Rose-Haired Tarantula, Giant African Landsnails and more.

Open March 9-17, 2024 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Timed tickets are required.
