I can’t believe the Victoria Day Weekend is already here? Where did spring go? The upside is the weather is forecast to be warm (25C-26C) and sunny so many people heading up north will be thrilled! Gardeners staying in the city like me will be happy to know it’s warm enough to start planting flowers and veggies. Keep reading to find out what I’m crushing on in May 2024:

Scoop on Netflix

Scoop was recently released on Netflix and we were eager to watch it since we are interested in the Royal Family. Scoop is based on Prince Andrew’s revealing interview with the BBC in 2019 regarding his friendship with convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. After the interview, Prince Andrew withdrew from his public duties. Gillian Anderson is outstanding as journalist Emily Maitlis who conducts the interview with the Royal; Anderson’s English accent is spot on, which you will know if you saw her play Margaret Thatcher in The Crown. The Diplomat‘s Rufus Sewell as Prince Andrew is casually polite, detached and tone deaf about the gravity of the situation.

White Wedge Sandals from Naturalizer

I picked up these Naturalizer White Wedge Sandals from Winners for $69.99 and love them. The wedge heel is perfect for me – just a bit over 2 1/12″ – so it’s easy to walk in them. The cork wedge heel is very light and there is an adjustable velcro strap to tighten them as much as you want around the ankle. I can wear them with jeans, as pictured, with flowy, wide-leg pants or with my long summer dresses. I love this great find from Winners!

Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands by Kate Beaton

This is the first graphic novel I have read and I wouldn’t have opened the cover unless my sister had recommended it to me. Although it’s a thick book, it reads very quickly since it’s told in cartoon-style. In this autobiography, the author documents her harrowing experience working as a tool inventory clerk on an Oil Sands project in Fort McMurray, Alberta. Beaton, who is originally from Cape Breton, experiences sexual harassment from her mostly male colleagues on an hourly basis. The events take place from 2005-2008 before the Me Too Movement, but long after sexual harassment policies had been implemented by government so there is no excuse for the atrocious behaviour she experiences. I found this book a complete eye-opener and surprisingly funny at times despite the subject matter.

Smelly MonZsters are a plush stuffed animal with a cowbell and lavender essential oil to soothe adults experiencing anxiety.

Smelly MonZster

I love my new Smelly MonZster! May is Mental Health Awareness Month so I was very interested when a friend contacted me about a stuffed animal she and her brother co-created called Smelly MonZsters, which is a cuddly soft plush creature that acts as a soothing companion for adults experiencing anxiety. When we were younger, most of us had a Teddy whom we snuggled up to while in bed and maybe shared our deepest secrets and fears, right?

Although I don’t experience anxiety now, I have experienced it on occasion in the past so I can relate to the need for a soft stuffed animal companion for adults.

JD Hazen created Smelly MonZsters emphasizing touch, scent and sound to soothe your anxiety. Smelly MonZsters are cute, well-made stuffed animals that come with either Orange or Lavender Essential Oil that you can spray on your Smelly MonZster to create a calming effect. The cowbell around its neck produces a soothing sound. Seams of the stuffed animal are sewn on the outside to symbolize the feeling of being turned inside out when experiencing anxiety. The word “BREATHE” is embroidered on each MonZster to remind you to do just that!

This project is a passion of love, not profit driven at all. Her brother will be donating a portion of the proceeds to Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto.

There are a very limited number of Smelly MonZsters available for purchase for $39-$50. Delivery is available in the Greater Toronto Area only. Please head to their Smelly MonZsters website and send an email to JD to purchase a Smelly MonZster.

Video Editing Course by Olya Gulakova

I purchased a video editing course by Canadian public relations professional and Instagram influencer Olya Gulakova and am loving how much I’m learning about editing videos for Instagram and TikTok using the Capcut app. I have always admired influencers who have been able to post really stylish, eye-catching videos on Instagram and TikTok, but I never knew how they did it! Olya clearly breaks down much of the “magic” you see in Instagram videos with her step-by-step instruction. First, she shows you what the video will look like and then she shows you have to recreate it. Olya is very responsive if you have any questions about the course or lessons. If you want to take your video editing skills to the next level, I highly recommend Olya’s courses. She also offers one-on-one tutoring for an additional fee.
