Have you ever experienced an event that just seems to be touched by magic? This is how I would describe an extended long weekend that I had with my sister and her family in Midland, Ontario. My niece and her fiancé were visiting Canada from their home in New Zealand, introducing us to their 4-month old son so my sister and her husband decided to rent an Airbnb in Midland and invited my mom and me to stay for a few days.
The Airbnb that my sister and husband rented was incredibly spacious with a gorgeous, modern kitchen, a living room with a fireplace and fabulous view of Georgian Bay, three beautifully-decorated bedrooms, and a bathroom in which you could have a yoga class.
Divine intervention resulted in us having a resurgence of summer with glorious temperatures of 31C! I have never been swimming in a lake in October, so it was an exquisite pleasure to be able to do this! I will admit that the lake water was cool, but the air temperature was so warm that it made it possible. I was also thrilled to go kayaking one more time this year.
We stopped for lunch and craft beer at Test Batches Brewery in Midland. This microbrewery is also an eatery offering generous portions on comfort food such as sandwiches, flatbreads and salads. Don’t forget to pick up house-made treats including peanut butter cups, cake pops, sponge toffee and more.
On Sunday, we visited Southern Georgian Bay Farmers’ Market located in downtown Midland at Bayshore and Midland Avenue to pick up fresh produce, meat and eggs. Vendors were also selling pastries, breads, fresh flowers and gorgeous carved wood boards.
Seeing that it was fall, we wanted to buy a pumpkin for photos with the baby so we were in luck when we discovered a pumpkin patch at Dubeau Family Farm. The farm also sells produce and delicious homemade pies – we bought a blueberry one that was incredible!
Later that evening, we went to The Boathouse Eatery where we were delighted to be able to dine on the patio as it was still very warm. I had a chicken Caesar salad while my niece and brother-in-law ordered the Butternut Squash Ravioli, which they both raved about. Other family members ordered burgers and a chicken wrap. It was an enchanting evening as we were able to watch the sun set over Midland Bay and then later see a full moon illuminate the sky.
The following day, we visited Sainte Marie Among The Hurons and learned about the village where the French Jesuit Mission lived during the 17th century in partnership with the Huron-Wendat people. Afterwards, we had a wonderful lunch on the patio at the village’s restaurant.
I am so thankful for the glorious time I had with my family to celebrate the birth of my great nephew! What a pleasure it was to see his dimpled smile, and hear his cooing sounds as I put my arms around him! I will always remember the glorious time we had in Midland and how the weather gods bestowed on us such exceptional weather for our family get-together!

What a magical getaway you captured. The mix of sunshine, serene lake time, and cozy Airbnb vibes had me feeling like I was right there with you. I especially loved how you wove in the local charm, from the pumpkin patch to the farmers’ market, it makes me want to pack a bag and head to Midland tomorrow.

Really cute and fun post to read! I have a family member who wants to visit Canada eventually. In fact, they mentioned maybe wanting to live there! She starting to travel a little, and next year she should be visiting the Caribbean! I hope to gain a little more courage to travel as well. Maybe someday!
