So, you’re getting ready to move to another neighbourhood in Toronto and you’re not necessarily looking forward to all of the steps involved? Understandably, you’re probably dreading the idea of packing all your belongings into boxes, loading them into your vehicle, and making repeat trips, only to arrive at your new place and have to unpack everything that you just packed. This entire process can seem even more menial and annoying when you’re only moving a few miles away. Fortunately, you can simplify your move by heeding the steps provided below:

1. Get Help From a Toronto-Based Moving Company
Taking care of a move by yourself is never the best idea in Toronto because the city’s congested traffic can make for some very unpleasant experiences. Thus, if you really want to minimize your involvement and streamline the process, hiring a local moving company like Phillips Moving who are renown in the Toronto area would be an ideal course of action. Phillips Moving is widely trusted as one of the region’s most reliable, affordable, and professional moving companies with over 90 years’ experience in the industry.
2. Leave Certain Items Behind
Taking everything with you might seem like the preferred solution because nobody wants to purposefully lose some of their belongings, but there are some items that just aren’t worth bringing along. Now is the time to go through your belongings and determine what you do and don’t use. For instance, do you have old appliances or furniture you no longer use that are taking up space in your basement? Sell them online or take them to your local thrift store. Why pay for them to be moved to your new residence when you no longer use them?
3. Bring Small Valuables in Your Personal Vehicle
If you have small valuables like jewellery, china or plants, it’s generally best to take those items with you on your person when you move. While professional movers can usually be trusted, it’s just wiser to keep highly valuable items with you during your move. On the other hand, if you’re going to be travelling via public transportation, then you might be better off hiding your valuables deep within a larger box and leaving them with the moving company for transportation.
4. Make a List of Your Belongings
Creating a thorough list of all your belongings before you move will help you discover any lost or misplaced items quickly. This will also help you prioritise when deciding which items can be left behind. Additionally, you should label all of your boxes and specify which box each item was placed in when keeping an inventory of your personal property.
5. Make Sure You Have Appropriate Insurance Coverage
Before you have other people come into your home and start moving your property around, it’s best to make sure you have backup insurance in place in the form of a renter’s or homeowner’s insurance policy. If you opt for a professional moving company as recommended above, then they should have the necessary insurance to make sure you’re covered, so this is advised for anyone who is getting their friends and family to help with the move.
6. Take the Back Streets and Avoid Rush Hour
One of the best ways to simplify your move is to avoid the highway when moving, as that is where most of the heavy traffic jams take place. There are three different rush hours you’ll want to avoid. The first is from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. when the highway traffic is the worst. The second is from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. when you should try to avoid the Gardiner and Don Valley Parkway (DVP). The third rush hour takes place from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. and is generally only bad on the TTC.
7. Give Yourself Time to Avoid a Rush
The more leeway you give yourself to take your time and move slowly, the less likely you are to encounter mishaps and mistakes. Being thorough and moving methodically is important when moving because rushing could put you in a position to lose or damage your property or incur an injury.
8. Rent a Vehicle If You Don’t Have One
Finally, Toronto’s extensive public transportation system (TTC) makes it very easy for people to live and work in the city without owning a personal vehicle. If you’re one of the many non-driving professionals in the region, you may want to consider renting an economical van for a few days during your move. That way, you’ll be able to go back and forth with ease and you’ll have a vehicle for transporting sensitive items or extra boxes that would overload the moving truck.
Moving to Another Neighbourhood Should Be Simple and Stress-Free
There’s no reason why moving to another neighbourhood in Toronto should be anything more than a minor inconvenience. For most people, the process can be completed in just one business day or over a weekend. By heeding the tips given above, you can make sure your personal labour commitments are minimal and streamline most of the hard work involved. Ultimately, all you really need to do is hire the right local moving company to make sure your experience goes smoothly. The other tips to simplify your move are optional but will definitely make everything easier on you.

These are great tips, I am not in Toronto but I can tell you that moving in general can be stressful if not thought out and planned correctly. I have moved four times and we have one final move to do hopefully in January.
Great moving tips.
I especially like tip number 2. It’s a great time to get rid of some of your (or your partners’) stuff.
Oh it looks so pretty!I always wanted to visit Toronto, specially because I have a very good friend there. I know I would love to walk in this beautiful neighborhood.
Let me know if you ever decide to visit Toronto…I can provide you some tourist advice! Cheers, Lori
I hate moving. In my life I’ve moved several times, especially since my dad is in the military. All the times, it’s always been stressful and exhausting to have to put away and then set up, everything again.
Through all these instances though, one thing has been most valuable, SIMPLICITY. The less things you have, the easier it is to move.
So true. If you don’t have a lot of stuff, it’s much easier to move! Cheers, Lori
Moving home is never easy, you have some great tips and advice here for those who are moving soon x
Moving is one of my least favourite things to do! Cheers, Lori
Great tips for moving house. Honestly, we have only moved 3 times in my entire lifetime. I hope we stay put in this house because it really is stressful to go through moving house. I will share your tips when I come to learn of a friend or family member who will be needing these tips.
I also do not like moving! I moved twice in the last six years and that’s more than enough for me! Cheers, Lori
I think this list and tips can apply to all neighborhoods around the world! Great put together.
I agree…these tips don’t just apply to Toronto! Cheers, Lori
I just moved into a new house myself and I wish I had your tips to help me. It was rather chaotic and I should definitely have made a list of all my belongings, I am still looking for certain things that I might have left behind… Thanks for sharing, these tips are super helpful!
Moving can be so stressful! Sometimes we don’t always have time to be super-organized! Hope you enjoy your new place! Cheers, Lori
Good tips for those who are moving in any neighborhood around the world. One of my tips always looks at the road signs in the new place (I never experience one-way streets till I got to my current location, and experienced a very mad driver who was honking at me to let me I wasn’t suppose to go that way on the street). Good luck with moving!
That’s such a good tip! In downtown Toronto, there are so many one way streets, unlike the suburbs, so you have to really pay attention! Cheers, Lori
